In Mining

The mining sector is one of the world’s largest energy consumers, and a material contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The rate of increase of electricity demand in mining and specifically in emerging markets will exceed the world average because of:

  • The increase in demand for minerals required to drive de-carbonisation for which Africa is a key source.
  • Decreasing grades and mineral concentration levels will require increased power.
  • The remoteness of mines and off-grid locations of the majority of mines in Africa.

Energy usage constitutes approximately 30% of total operating costs for most mines. Incorporating renewables can reduce operating costs by approximately 25% in existing mining operations and up to approximately 50% for developing mines.

In addition to cost savings, benefits include the reduction of Scope 2 emissions, preservation of the mine’s social license to operate, and carbon credits.

In Real Estate

As the world shifts towards sustainable development, the integration of renewable energy in commercial real estate has become a vital strategy for reducing carbon footprints, promoting environmental stewardship and promoting energy independence.

As a landlord, investing in energy efficient solutions will help reduce operating costs, increase property value and occupancy rates.

For tenants it provides reduced, predictable electricity costs.
